"When
you show that you care about [employees] and understand that your true role
is as their servant-leader, then they'll meet your sales targets for you."

“Leaders
are learning that this kind of empowerment, which is what servant-leadership
represents, is one of the key principles that, based on practice, not talk,
will be the deciding point between an organization's enduring success or its
eventual extinction.”
—Stephen Covey

Servant Leadership is based on core values and actions that arise from a desire to serve others. Robert Greenleaf first coined the term as it relates to business, "The servant-leader is servant first…It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first... [D]o those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?" "Service" in this context is not to be confused with "servitude." Servitude implies being in a one down position to another person and giving from a place of need to or have to. True service, by contrast, stems from a desire to give from the heart. It is freely shared without any expectation for something in return. The shear joy of giving is the reward gained from this level of service. As Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline, states "Th[e] choice [to serve] is not an action in the normal sense-it's not something you do, but an expression of your being." |
Most organizations today still lead by a Command & Control style of leadership, which is conterproductive to effectively leading an organization through transformational change. Servant Leadership is a more evolved form of leadership that recognizes the value in the people side of business to fulfill the organization's mission. It is about engaging everyone involved and using their talents to bring about needed change.
Differences in Leadership
| Command & Control | Servant Leadership | |
| Business Metaphor | Organization is a machine | Organic structure of relationships |
| Authority | Top down | Participation by entire group |
| People | Instruments of production | Greatest assets and sources of creativity |
| Leadership Style | Distant and detached | Connected and present |
| Supervisory Approach | Dictate, control, punitive | Listen, facilitate, encourage |
| Service Orientation | Self-serving - What can you do for me and the organization? | Other serving - what can I do to help you fulfill your goals and mission? |
Servant Leadership is a holistic approach to business that encourages leaders to embody the following traits in relation to themselves and the outer world.
